Makris to return for season finale

Reigning Australian Prototypes Series champion Jason Makris has announced a shock return to the series, despite ruling himself out of the season ahead of the fourth round at Winton.

With Makris now finding time to compete in the final round, his return came as somewhat of a shock to those around him, however the motivation behind his change of heart is less surprising.

“For me, coming back for the final round is really about preparing for 2020,” Makris said.

“I pulled out the title race earlier on in the year in order to let someone else win it and there are some really good contenders so it’s up for grabs any of those guys.

“Honestly, I am just going to throw a spanner in the works and hopefully round out the season on high. As well as well as getting some more time in the car as well at The Bend Motorsport Park, I am hopeful of having some fun with the other competitor and stirring things up for the contenders.

“I would like to have some influence over the title.”

One person who would have mixed feelings about Makris’ arrival is Jam Motorsport teammate JP Drake, who had the opportunity to drive Makris’ series winning car at Winton earlier this year.

Unfortunately, Drake was unable to take out the round victory putting him a little further back in the standings, meaning the Queenslander would return to the series in his car.

“I gave JP Drake my car as a token of my gratitude and to help him have a shot at the title while I was away but he blew it,” Makris joked.

"In all seriousness though, the agreement with JP was if he won at Winton, he could potentially have my car for the final round but he didn’t, so I am going to drive in my own.

“It was never part of the plan to return for the final round, but only in the last couple of weeks did it work out.

“I am itching to get back out there. The Bend is a really good track. It’s got lots of aero, it’s fun so I would love to do it in my own car.

"I am really looking forward to getting into next year so realistically this round is just preparation for 2020. “

The Australian Prototype Series has one round remaining in 2019, with David Barram leading Daniel Gonzalez and Drake in the three-way title fight.
