Barram seals pole

David Barram has claimed early bragging rights in the Australian Prototype Series opening round, sealing top spot in the one and only qualifying session at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Barram’s Chiron LMP3 saw him earn pole position for today’s first race, 0.6s ahead of nearest rival Mark Short. Barram’s blistering lap of 1:25.97 highlighting his pace around the Sydney circuit.

It was an impressive lap time from Barram, who said he was extremely pleased to be starting the race in pole.

“I had a few dramas yesterday – a tyre blow out – but we’ve recovered from that,” Barram said.

“We had a couple of changes to the set up overnight and it has gone well. This weekend I really want reliability and to finish. If I get on the podium that’s a bonus, to win (would be) a super bonus.”

Short will start from second on the grid, after he posted a 1:26.56.

After a strong qualifying performance, Short was also pleased to be up front for the opening race.

“I’m wrapt. I would’ve hoped for a bit more from the new tyres but I’m happy with second,” Short said.

“My best chance is to get a good start to try and pull a gap in the first few corners so they can’t catch me on the straight.”

Starting third in today’s race is John-Paul Drake who was thrilled to claim third in his Wolf GB08CN.

“That was my best lap ever (at Sydney Motorsport Park),” Drake said.

“The car setup is really good. Last year we spent a fair bit of time setting this car up… its running really well, we are so happy with the car. The actual feel of the car has been amazing, really good traction around the track, so pretty good for a morning session I think.”
